Read that middle column again โ the logic clicks once you see it. When a 5 comes out, a card the dealer needed just left the deck, so the count goes UP: good for you. When a king comes out, one of your cards left, so the count goes DOWN. Suits mean nothing. A ten and an ace count exactly the same (โ1).
The count starts at 0 every time the dealer shuffles. As cards hit the felt, you add their values in your head. The total is your running count, and it only tells you one thing โ but it's the only thing that matters: a high positive count means the deck is now stacked with tens and aces.
Why does a "balanced" system self-check? Every deck has exactly twenty +1 cards (four each of 2โ6) and twenty โ1 cards (sixteen tens/faces plus four aces). Count through a full deck and you'll always land on exactly 0 โ which means any time you practice with a real deck, the deck itself tells you whether you were right.
Knowing the values is step one. Keeping up with a real dealer is step two โ casino dealers move fast, and a beginner trying to add card-by-card falls behind by the third hand. The fix is how every pro actually counts: in pairs, because pairs cancel.
A king and a five land together? That's โ1 and +1 = zero โ you don't even think a number, you just skip them. A queen and a jack together? โ2, one single thought. A 4 and a 3? +2, one thought. Roughly a third of all pairs cancel to zero, which means pairing instantly cuts your mental work by a third and makes the rest feel like tapping a rhythm instead of doing math.
What you'll actually count at the table: every card you can see, exactly once. In many double-deck games the dealer "pitches" your two cards face down โ count them the moment you peek at them. Other players' cards get flipped face up when they bust or when the round ends โ count them then. The dealer's upcard is face up immediately; their hidden "hole card" gets counted when it's revealed at the end, along with every hit card they draw. Develop one consistent sweep โ left to right across the table, dealer last โ and never count the same card twice.
Here's a problem the running count can't solve alone. Say your count is +4. If there's only one deck left to be dealt, those four extra small-cards-gone are concentrated in 52 cards โ the deck is seriously hot. But if +4 is spread across lots of remaining cards, it's diluted โ barely anything. Same running count, totally different situations. So counters convert to a per-deck number:
Where does "decks remaining" come from? The discard tray โ the clear plastic holder next to the dealer where all the dealt cards pile up. Glance at the stack: about a quarter-inch of cards โ half a deck (26 cards) used. Started with two decks, half a deck in the tray โ 1.5 decks remain. Half-deck accuracy is all you need, and your eyes learn it within a week of practice.
And now you can see why double deck is the counter's playground: the divisor is tiny and shrinks fast. Every card you see moves the true count more than it ever could in a big multi-deck game. Hot decks arrive quicker, spike higher, and you're never more than a few minutes from the next shuffle resetting everything to zero for a fresh attack.
Time for the part most beginners get backwards. Counting doesn't make money. Betting more when you have the edge and betting the minimum when you don't makes money. You'll still lose plenty of high-count hands โ the edge is a few percent, not a crystal ball. The profit comes from having your big bets out during the hands where the math favors you, thousands of times over.
