Blackjack is the rare casino game with a memory: cards already dealt can't come out again, so the makeup of the remaining deck changes hand by hand. That's the entire edge β and it's why this site's table deals from a real shuffled deck without replacement.
A deck rich in tens and aces favors you: more blackjacks (paid 3:2), stronger doubles, and a dealer who busts more often when forced to hit stiff hands. A deck rich in low cards favors the dealer, whose 12β16 hands keep surviving.

Hi-Lo is the most-used counting system in the world: powerful enough for a real edge, simple enough to run in your head all night. Every card gets one of three values:
Low cards leaving the deck is good for you (that's why they're +1), and high cards leaving is bad (β1). The middle cards barely matter, so they count as nothing.
Start every fresh shuffle at 0. As each card is revealed β yours, other players', the dealer's β add its Hi-Lo value. That single number is the running count.
Example: the first hand shows 5, K, 9, 2, A, 7. That's +1 β1 0 +1 β1 0 = 0. Next hand shows 4, 3, 6, J: +1 +1 +1 β1 = running count +2.
A running count of +6 means something very different with one deck left versus five decks left. To compare apples to apples, divide:
true count = running count Γ· decks remaining
Running +6 with 3 decks left is a true count of +2 β decent. Running +6 with 1.5 decks left is +4 β excellent. The true count is what your betting and playing decisions key off.
Estimating decks remaining takes practice at a real table (eyeball the discard tray); this site's tracker shows it exactly, so you can focus on the arithmetic first.
The count doesn't change how often you win a given hand as much as it changes how much the good situations pay. The whole strategy is: bet small when the deck is neutral or cold, bet big when the true count climbs.
